Plant Arrivals

It's officially spring...
It has felt like spring this year long before the official start date. But, now that we are into spring according to the calendar, it's time to start thinking about what plants are arriving and what can actually go outside. Cold tolerant perennials are your best bet for this time of year. Most perennials that we have outside at the nursery are "hardened off" which is an expression meaning simply the plants have adjusted to the cold temperatures and aren't coming right out of a warm greenhouse. These plants won't be shocked by the cold outside, especially the nights, which tend to still drop into the 30's at times. A hard frost can still damage foliage so be careful to cover any newly purchased plants with paper or cloth, not plastic, just in case there is a warning of frost.
Shrubs and trees can also start to be planted this year since the ground is not frozen. Just be sure the soil doesn't clump and that it is workable. You want new shrubs and perennials to get a good start.
Shrubs like forsythia and pussywillows are already here, but many more are arriving every week. We'll keep you updated on new plant arrivals as the seaason progresses on our home page.
