Perennials Day
Save the date
Saturday, June 9, 2012
Program (Back Barn Auditorium)
9:15 Registration:
Pre-registrants will receive handouts and lunch ticket.
9:30 New Spin on Old Favorites, with Susan Martin of Walters Gardens
The Director of Marketing Communications for Walter Gardens (Zeeland, Michigan), Susan Martin knows gardening and the green industry. Her talk will show side-by-side comparisons of traditional perennials and the newer cultivars now available to home gardeners. Walters Gardens is the largest wholesale grower of perennials in the United States. The plants she will feature (many for sale at Lockwood’s that day) will be suitable for Western New York’s hardiness zone, soil and weather conditions.
10:45 Break
11:00 Floriferous Designs, with Joseph Han, The English Gardeners
As owner of The English Gardeners—generally considered one of Western New York’s finest (and prize-winning) landscape design firms—Joe has meticulously photographed the “before” and “after” story of some amazing gardens. He will also share insights into the landscape design process—how to take a blank slate and create a new garden. The English Gardeners’ designs are known especially for incorporating perennials and flowering containers into both front and back yards, and you’ll be dazzled by the difference the flowers can make!
12:15 Catered luncheon under the tent—Lockwood family garden
Dine with our speakers and your friends, with plenty of time to browse the plant departments or ask questions.
1:00 (luncheon area) Perennials Show & Tell with Sally Cunningham
Now that you’ve seen the pictures, let Sally show you the plants. See the perennial cultivars that Susan and Joe have mentioned and a few alternatives that Lockwoods’ staff recommends. Staff will be available in each department to help you find native plants, shade plants, partial sun/shade plants, full sun plants and groundcovers.
1:30 Eye on Design with Susan Martin
Garden design starts with basic design principles, and Susan will show you how to apply them to create dynamic perennial combinations. After today’s seminar you’ll be prepared to choose plants and put them together in ways you may never have imagined.
